It's one of the first questions people ask us: do I actually need a golf cart in San Pedro? The honest answer depends on where you're staying and what you want to do. Here's how golf carts, taxis, bikes and walking compare in 2026.
Your options at a glance
The Belize dollar is fixed at BZ$2 to US$1, so BZ$10 is US$5. The taxi and bike prices below come from Taco Girl's Ambergris Caye guide. Fares change, so always confirm the price before you ride.
| Option | Typical cost | Works well for |
|---|---|---|
| Walking | Free | Staying in or near town |
| Bike | About BZ$80 (US$40) a week from a rental shop; some hotels lend bikes | Short trips on a budget |
| Taxi | About BZ$8 near town, BZ$15 south past Victoria House, BZ$35 or more north of the bridge | Occasional rides and nights out |
| Golf cart | 4-seater from US$33/day or US$175/week (plus tax and insurance); 6-seater US$75/day or US$400/week | Day trips, families and stays outside town |
Walking
Downtown San Pedro is compact. Taco Girl describes "in town" as the area from Tropic Air north to Belize Bank, about six blocks long and three blocks wide, and calls walking the easiest way to get around it. If you're staying in town, many shops, restaurants and bars are an easy walk away.
Bikes
A bike covers more ground than walking for very little money. Check with your hotel first: some lend bikes to guests for free, and some charge a small fee. Keep in mind that longer rides are hot, and the roads north of the bridge include bumpy dirt sections.
Taxis
Taxis are easy to find outside the Tropic Air baggage claim area and at the water taxi terminal. Always agree on the price before you get in, even for a short ride. Some drivers carry a printed rate sheet for northern and southern destinations, and it's fine to ask to see it.
Longer trips add up fast. Thoroughly Travel puts a taxi to Secret Beach at about US$50 each way.
Golf carts
A cart lets you come and go on your own schedule, carry beach gear and groceries, and get to places like Secret Beach without paying for every ride. We deliver and pick up free anywhere on Ambergris Caye, and our roadside assistance is available 24/7.
Which option fits where you're staying
Staying in town
You can walk to most of what you need. Thoroughly Travel's advice for in-town guests is that you may only need a cart for a day or two. Save those days for outings like Secret Beach or a drive up north, and walk or take a taxi the rest of the time.
Staying south of town
The farther south you are, the more each trip into town costs. A taxi from past Victoria House runs in the BZ$15 range each way, so one round trip is about BZ$30 (US$15). Go into town twice a day and you're near US$30.
If you'll head into town most days, a cart for most of your stay usually makes sense. If you're close to town and don't mind pedaling, a bike plus a cart for your outing days can work well.
Staying north of the bridge
This is where a cart matters most. Taxis north of the bridge run BZ$35 or more each way, so a single round trip into town is at least BZ$70 (US$35). That's about the same as a day of our 4-seater, before tax and insurance.
Thoroughly Travel sums it up: you generally need a golf cart if you're staying outside the main town. For most stays up here, a cart for the whole trip is the simplest plan.
How many days do you need a cart?
Start with your plans:
- One or two days: You're staying in town and want one or two outings.
- Most of your stay: You're south of town and heading into town most days.
- Your whole stay: You're north of the bridge, or you're traveling with kids, gear or a busy schedule.
The weekly-rate math
At our starting rates, the weekly rate comes out ahead once you need a cart for six days:
- 4-seater: Six days at US$33 is US$198. A week is US$175.
- 6-seater: Six days at US$75 is US$450. A week is US$400.
For five days or fewer, the daily rate costs less.
Timing your rental days
Rental days run in 24-hour blocks from the time we deliver the cart. A cart delivered at 2 p.m. is yours until 2 p.m. the next day. That means an afternoon delivery can cover dinner out tonight and a Secret Beach morning tomorrow.
If you rent a cart
A few things to know before you drive:
- Carry your driver's license whenever you drive.
- Use your headlights after sunset.
- Watch for one-way streets in town.
- Don't park on red curbs; you can be fined.
- Take the key and lock up when you park.
- Don't drink and drive. The San Pedro Sun reports that joint police checkpoints are increasing.
