Arriving by Tropic Air, Maya Island Air or Water Taxi: How Golf Cart Pickup Works

Flying in on Tropic Air or Maya Island Air, or riding the water taxi from Belize City or Caye Caulker? Having a golf cart waiting when you arrive makes the start of your trip simple. Since 2025, that starts with booking ahead. Here's why, and how pickup works with us.

Why you need to book before you arrive

In January 2025, The San Pedro Sun reported that the San Pedro Town Council (SPTC) had banned golf cart rental companies from soliciting customers at key ports of entry, including the municipal airport and the water taxi terminals. Rental companies may still pick up customers who made prior bookings, and the council is actively monitoring the ports of entry.

The ban followed complaints from taxi drivers. The Sun also noted a condition in golf cart trade licenses: "All golf cart rentals must operate from their registered office location."

What that means for you

  • Book ahead if you want a cart waiting when you land or step off the boat.
  • Don't plan on renting at the terminal. Rental companies aren't allowed to approach arriving passengers to offer carts.
  • No booking yet? Taxis are easy to find outside the Tropic Air baggage claim area and at the water taxi terminal. Head to your hotel and arrange a cart from there.

Where we meet you

We deliver and pick up free anywhere on Ambergris Caye, including the Tropic Air and Maya Island Air terminals and the water taxi terminals.

Arriving by plane

Tropic Air and Maya Island Air both fly into the San Pedro airstrip, officially John Greif II Airport (airport code SPR), right in town. There isn't one shared terminal. Each airline has its own small terminal, so tell us which airline you're on.

The flight from Belize City is short. Maya Island Air says flights to Ambergris Caye take about 20 minutes from either the municipal airstrip or the international airport.

Arriving by water taxi

  • San Pedro Belize Express moved to its own terminal on Coconut Drive, south of the town center, in January 2025. If an older guide mentions the dock in front of Central Park, it's out of date. The company lists the trip at about 1 hour 30 minutes from Belize City and 30 minutes from Caye Caulker.
  • Caribbean Sprinter (formerly the Caye Caulker Water Taxi Association and Ocean Ferry) says its boats arrive in the heart of San Pedro Town.
  • Other boats, such as the Thunderbolt from Corozal or boats from Chetumal, Mexico: tell us the boat company and we'll confirm where to meet you.

What to tell us when you book

You can book online or message us on WhatsApp at +501 673-4454. In the booking form, put your airline or terminal in "Delivery Location," set "Start Time" to your scheduled arrival, and add these details in "Additional Notes":

  • Airline or boat company
  • Flight number or boat departure time, plus your scheduled arrival time in San Pedro
  • Where you're coming from (Belize City, Caye Caulker, Corozal or Chetumal)
  • How many people and how many bags
  • Where you're staying
  • A phone number with WhatsApp, so we can reach you if plans change
  • Your departure date, time and airline or boat, if you'd like to return the cart at the terminal

Delayed, or rebooked onto a later flight or boat? Send us a WhatsApp message with your new arrival time.

Luggage

Luggage rules depend on how you travel, so check before you pack:

  • San Pedro Belize Express: One checked bag up to 23 kg (50 lb) and one small carry-on that fits under the seat. Oversized or overweight bags are charged at cargo rates. Checked bags get a color-coded tag (pink for San Pedro), and you'll need the tag to claim your bag.
  • Maya Island Air: Its FAQ lists one small personal item, one checked bag and one carry-on per passenger.
  • Tropic Air: Baggage allowances vary by fare, so check what yours includes.

When you book, tell us your group size and roughly how many bags you have. Traveling with a group or lots of gear? A 6-seater gives you more seats for people and bags.

Returning the cart when you leave

On your last day, we can collect the cart at your hotel or meet you at the airstrip or water taxi terminal. Plan to be there for a quick check of the cart together, and leave enough time for check-in:

  • Tropic Air: Check in at least 30 minutes before a domestic flight. If your international itinerary starts with a domestic Tropic Air flight, check in at least 1 hour before departure.
  • Maya Island Air: Be at its terminal at least 30 minutes before your flight.
  • San Pedro Belize Express: Check your luggage in at least 15 minutes before departure. The company also recommends arriving early.

Catching an international flight home? Tropic Air advises allowing at least 3 hours to connect from its flight to another airline's international flight at Belize International Airport (BZE). Work backward from that when you choose your flight to Belize City and your cart return time.
